… Taught by a volunteer from a local church, and using donated material, the men of the P.L.U.S. Program have made a quilting a distinctive of their unit. On their own initiative, the men have made memorial quilt to honor the sacrifice of every Hoosier killed in the line of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. Additional projects include providing quilts for local nursing home, homeless shelters, and hospitals. Individuals quilts have also been presented to Governor Pence, former Governor Daniels and other state leaders. Serving long sentences, many for violent crimes, the men of the Wabash Valley P.L.U.S. Program are not typical quilters. so why have they embraces quilting with such enthusiasm and passion? One participant summed it up, “A quilt is just a bunch of scraps that aren’t of much use on their own, but together they have beauty and purpose, just like us.”
